This documentary will preserve an important part of history for the ages, supply a platform for these heroes to tell their stories and educate its viewers on the truths of integration through the the eyes of those who lived through it.
Click to DonateWe have received brief snapshots of some of the things that occurred during the initial integration process of the U.S. school systems through the lives of notable students involved (e.g., Linda Carol Brown, the Little Rock Nine, and Ruby Bridges). However, for the masses of students involved in this process, there have been very few in-depth, firsthand accounts of what they went through mentally, emotionally, and physically in the name of social change. Centered around the narratives of brave, former students of Newberry, South Carolina schools, the documentary Child POWs: Stories of Students on the Frontline of the Initial School Integration aims to celebrate the students from Newberry, SC as they present first-hand accounts of what they endured and sacrificed during the initial stages of school integration. Until now their stories, sacrifices and contributions to the civil rights movement have been only personal recollections and never a part of history.
Although many, many years have passed since they took part in this process, it is amazing how telling their stories caused each of them to at once step back in time, relive the moments and feel the emotions--both good and bad--that they experienced then. By telling their intertwined stories, all of them received some measure of therapy. Putting their stories into this documentary will preserve an important part of history for the ages and supply a platform for these heroes to tell their stories, be heard, and possibly receive a measure of much needed relief.
We hope that this documentary will further educate its viewers on the truths of integration by allowing them to see a historical event through the eyes of those who lived through it. Furthermore, we believe it will connect those dots surrounding the importance of current events and their global impact to ultimately encourage viewers to be more understanding of and interested in the events that shape our world. Journey with us as we celebrate the triumphs of these heroes as they leave their mark on history and shed some of the pain inflicted on them as Child POWs of this country’s school desegregation process. This soul-stirring documentary marks a moment in history that will inspire many and teach all an important lesson about the many facets of human nature.
